As a rule, I like to recommend 1 tsp./gallon. However, if leery please just use 1/2 tsp./gallon to start. I wont go into the many benefits of using Kalkwasser, but will only state that it is not a chosen method of raising calcium by any means. It is however good ways to maintain calcium levels and supply hydroxide ion in the process, which neutralizes any acidic compounds and can actually help the skimmer in removal of phosphatesetc. To make a Kalk drip container is very simple. For starters simply start with a cleaned up 1 gallon milk jug and lid. Get some basic clear aquarium airline tubing. Drill 2 holes in the lid of the jug just big enough to push the tubing through. Cut one section of tubing about 2-3 long. Push this piece through one of the holes (this is to prevent vacuum from forming in the jug and to blow in to get things started, the kalk is never a threat). Put the lid on the jug and shove a second length of tubing in the other hole so that it is about 1/2 from the bottom of the jug and has enough length on the outside to hang quite a bit lower than the bottom of the jug for the gravity drip to work. Remove the lid. Fill the jug about 2/3 full of RO-DI water. Add I tsp. of Kalkwasser. Slowly invert the jug several times to mix (dont shake it because the Kalkwasser reacts readily with air, so keep any shaking to minimum. Top off the jug, invert the jug a couple of more times, and then screw the cap with the tube on. To regulate the drip to about 1-2 drops per/sec, you can use an air valve for air pumps, or simply restrict flow in some other manner (such as a knot or a clamp). Now, to get it started, set it up where it will be dripping and then blow into the little 2-3 piece of hose to make pressure and start the flow out of the jug. Gravity will then take over.
